AMI DISTANCE LEARNING DAY INFO
WHAT IS AN AMI DAY?
In the 2020-2021 school year, DESE (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education) began allowing school districts to implement Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) Plans on days that school is not able to be in session due to inclement weather. In the past, when the weather made it too dangerous for travel, the Clinton School District cancelled school, and added the day to the end of the school year. Now, when school districts implement their AMI Plan, distance learning occurs from home, and the school hours lost due to closure do not have to be made up.
HOW MANY AMI DISTANCE LEARNING DAYS CAN WE USE IN THE CLINTON SCHOOL DISTRICT?
The maximum number of AMI days allowed by the state of Missouri is five.
If we have to utilize all five AMI distance learning days, starting with the sixth day, we will go back to the previous system of calling a “snow day” and adding the day to the end of the school year. This would mean all of our students and teachers would have the day off.
WHAT WILL AN AMI DISTANCE LEARNING DAY LOOK LIKE FOR STUDENTS?
All of our students, both in-person and online, will have distance learning on an AMI day from 9 a.m. to 3:40 p.m., with a break from noon to 1 p.m.
Students should check their online learning platform at 9 a.m. to see what teachers have planned for the day.
As attendance is based on participation or learning activities completed on that day, students will be allowed 5 days to complete assignments once they return to school.
WHAT WILL AN AMI DISTANCE LEARNING DAY LOOK LIKE FOR TEACHERS?
Teachers will work from home on AMI days, or they may choose to come into the classroom if they prefer to use equipment at school, or follow directions issues by school superintendent.
Schedule:
Teachers will have planning time from 8 to 9 a.m. Lessons will be posted for students by 9 a.m. Teachers will be available to students during their regular school day, with the exception of an hour for lunch and midday planning from noon to 1 p.m.
Teachers will get a schedule from their building of when they can schedule video meetings if they choose to have them, so that students’ meetings will not overlap.
WHAT WILL AN AMI DISTANCE LEARNING DAY LOOK LIKE FOR EACH EMPLOYEE GROUP?
The human resources department created this table to help each group of employees know what to do on one of the five AMI days, and what to do on a snow day if we have six or more bad-weather days.
Classified employees will be paid for those days. Will discuss responsibilities with building leaders or Special Education director. Special education paras will plan with their supervising teachers to determine responsibilities for AMI days.
Substitutes which were scheduled will be cancelled for that day.
If we have days which physically must be made up then classified staff will be paid for the day they are present in person.
